What is the APIM in a Ford or Lincoln SYNC 3 system?
The APIM is the module that runs the SYNC infotainment system. It is separate from the touchscreen itself and controls many of the functions and features you interact with through SYNC 3.
Does my vehicle need to already have SYNC 3?
Yes. These APIM replacement products are intended for vehicles already equipped with factory SYNC 3. Replacing the APIM alone does not convert a SYNC 2 or factory 4-inch radio system to SYNC 3.
Do I need to know which APIM generation my vehicle uses?
No. Select your vehicle when ordering and All Things Sync will supply the appropriate compatible APIM hardware for the supported application.
Can Gen 4 APIM hardware be used in an older vehicle?
Yes. Gen 4 is newer-generation SYNC 3 hardware and can also be used in compatible older vehicles already equipped with factory SYNC 3.
Is the replacement APIM programmed to my VIN?

Do I need FORScan to install a replacement APIM?
The APIM is programmed before shipping, so you do not need to perform the standard APIM programming yourself with FORScan.
Can I add factory navigation when replacing my APIM?
Yes. Navigation-equipped APIM options are available for compatible applications, including newer Gen 4 navigation hardware.
Does a black SYNC 3 screen always mean the APIM is bad?
No. A black screen can be caused by the APIM, touchscreen/display, power, wiring or another issue. If you are unsure, review our APIM failure symptoms guide or contact us before ordering.
Will my factory features work with the replacement APIM?
The replacement APIM is programmed for your vehicle to retain supported factory features. Vehicle equipment and configurations can vary, so contact us before ordering if you have an unusual configuration or want to confirm a specific feature.
My model and year are listed. Does that guarantee compatibility?
Your vehicle must also already be equipped with the appropriate factory SYNC 3 system. Model year alone does not confirm the vehicle's original equipment. If you are unsure, send us your year, make, model, VIN and a photo of your current radio screen before ordering.
